She Built It Campaign

Women In Construction Update

The construction industry is an attractive and viable career option – and these targets will ensure women are proactively included and stay in the industry, with strong career pathways. Greater diversity makes all workplaces stronger – and greater representation of women in construction will benefit everyone in the industry.

Running late in 2022, the “She Built It” campaign will appear on streaming services, YouTube, Spotify and news sites, in regional newspapers and on radio including multicultural stations.

The ‘She Built It’ campaign – to be broadcast across digital, print, and radio – will aim to address women’s participation in construction trades, who currently account for just three per cent of that state’s workforce. The campaign highlights women’s success in the construction industry, in an attempt to encourage broader participation in the construction industry and create a more gender-inclusive industry.

This follows the initiative of the Victorian Government’s Building Equality Policy that requires companies involved in the state’s most valuable construction projects to meet targets for women’s participation on site. These targets seek to disrupt gender stereotypes in the country’s most male dominated industry.

COVID-19 had a disproportionate impact on women’s workforce participation, employment and economic security, with a significant number of women being displaced according to the Victorian Government. At the same time there is demand for workers in male-dominated industries including construction, transport and logistics that will form part of recovery efforts and experience growth.

Women have consistently comprised only 2% of field-based workers in the Australian construction sector over the past 30 years. Steps are being taken to address the gender imbalance in the industry to ensure that women displaced by COVID-19 do not fall even further behind in economic terms relative to men.

The campaign comes as the New South Wales Government launches its ‘Have Your Say’ consultation program, seeking to explore new ways of encouraging greater gender diversity in male-dominated industries.

New South Wales’ Deputy Secretary of Customer, Delivery and Transformation, William Murphy, said women were key in addressing the nation’s major skills shortages.

“As a modern and customer-centric government we are committed to making pathways to trades easier for our customers,” Mr Murphy said.

The Department of Customer Service’s (DCS) Behavioural Insights Unit (BIU) is supporting Training Services NSW’s Women in Trades Strategy by undertaking research and testing possible solutions.

“It’s important we better understand what does and doesn’t work when encouraging women to begin a trade career, especially in a male dominated workplace.”

In Queensland, Minister for Public Works and Procurement Mick de Brenni advised they were setting targets at QBuild Construction sites to create a blueprint to encourage more female participation across government building projects.

“You can’t be what you can’t see, so by introducing these aspiring young tradies to female professionals here today, we are helping to cement their career aspirations in construction."

“The percentage of women in trades has been between 2 per cent and 3 per cent for a long time, although in the period since coming to office, our continued efforts have seen women increasing their trade participation to almost 5 per cent.”
