Chinese New Year is upon us again, and supply chains worldwide will slow down during this time of year due to the Chinese rushing home after a long work year. This year is the Year of the Water Tiger so that you will see a lot of tigers in art, fashion and pop culture. The Tiger, known as the king of beasts in China, represents strength, fearlessness, bravery and ambition, relationships, and collaborative goals. Overall, it is said this is the year for switching careers, building teams and getting back into creative projects.
Is a new job or a relocation on your radar in 2022?
If yes, it will take a strategic and focused effort to stand out. No, we don’t mean turning up to job interviews in your latest tiger fashion acquisition, but the willingness to stand out to land your next job and advance your career.
What worked well when job searching in the past now requires some adjustment. This year, soft skills, relationship building, collaboration, the right mindset and continuing the conversation after a rejection feature in our list of how to level up your career in 2022. It is the year of taking seeing a ‘no’ as a ‘not for now’ and refocusing your ambition and search until you are successful.
Here are our 5 Top Tips in how to level up your career search in 2022:
1. Build Collaborative Relationships
Relationship building is more important than ever to cut through and stand out, so make a genuine effort to engage the recruiter or hiring manager. Attitude, attributes, and personality affect perceptions, which are difficult to read from a resume. Find a recruiter or hiring manager with the willingness, processes, and systems to present you well and advocate
for you to prospective employers. Jobs, circumstances, locations change. If you build a good relationship with your recruiter, they will be your advocate
and alongside you in your search throughout your entire career. You want someone who collaborates with people and is at the head of the game when markets change. One who can pitch you at the right point knows you well, knows your goals, and presents you in the best light.
2. Sell Yourself
The ability to sell yourself well doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but in 2022, if you want to stand out, it’s essential. And the keyword here is to sell yourself ‘well’. Our advice is to keep factual, not boastful. The ability to identify and understand your unique selling points, key strengths, and soft skills whilst matching these to the employer’s culture and criteria will add value to the job you’re applying for or interviewing for. Remember to share evidence of your achievements for each selling point and be able to propose a thoughtful and reasoned response on how to meet – or can meet - the criteria.
3. Show Bravery After a Rejection
Don’t let the conversation end with a rejection letter. In 2022 consistency and persistence are essential traits when job hunting and should not end when you find out your application was unsuccessful. Find a recruiter who will guide you so your interview is stellar, work with you to understand the employer's goals, culture, and expectations beyond the job description, who understands your personal goals and will keep working with you beyond a ‘no’ has a process to do that. You need to have a ‘not for now’ attitude, and so does your recruiter.
4. Avoid a shotgun approach
Don’t use the same resume in every application. Every employer is different in culture and position in the market and therefore values skills and competencies differently. Take the time to research a company to understand its culture and values and tailor your application to them. Yes, personalising your resume and covering letter for each role you apply for may seem like a lot of effort. But, if you want to stand out and give the impression that you are a good fit for them, you need to invest the time. In the end, time invested at the start of the process with a prospective employer will save you time in a fruitless search with a scattered approach.
5. Be Brave
To advance your career in 2022, you may need to consider previously searching outside your typical parameters and doing things differently. This may involve a willingness to relocate, adopt a hybrid working model, learn new technology, upskill, join an industry association, or network. This shows adaptability, which is one of the most valued soft skills in 2022. This is a critical skill both within companies and the wider world of work. In your resume and interview, if you can demonstrate examples of your adaptability, such as how you continued to add value to your employer, this will make you a stronger candidate in 2022.
