For many people, the career ladder isn’t a straight line anymore, and Christmas is traditionally a time where career shifts and job changes are commonplace. A recent survey has indicated that 1 in 20 workers are considering switching jobs at Christmas, and 18% of those who switched jobs in the last year intend to resume their former career.
The Construction Industry, amongst others, has recently been facing a severe shortage in staff and skills shortages. Combining the usual industry slowing down at this time of year with the Queensland borders reopening on December 13 provides the time and motivation to start the new year differently.
Media Release
In a joint media statement issued by Queensland Premier Palaszczuk and Minister for Health D’Ath on December 6, it was announced that Queensland borders would reopen early to domestic hotspots from 1am on Monday, December 13, as Queensland is on target to reach the quired of 80% fully vaccinated rates.
This means fully vaccinated travellers from interstate hotspots can arrive by road or air when they provide a negative Covid test in the previous 72 hours, and no quarantine is required. International travellers that are fully vaccinated and return a negative Covid test within 72 hours of departure will be required to get a test on arrival and go into home or hotel quarantine for 14 days. More information can be obtained on the Queensland Government website.
Record Number of Job Vacancies
With Covid-19 and the recent pandemics we have all endured changing our day-to-day working lives, people are increasingly searching for work-life balance, flexibility or simply for a job that is more fulfilling, and they will look to other industries and locations to find it.
With a record number of job vacancies this summer, many industries that had to hit pause on their hiring in the height of the pandemic are now experiencing labour shortages, and these are likely to continue in the coming months.
What’s on Offer
Businesses with urgent hiring requirements need to ensure they get the basics right when attracting talent. Job advertisements that include essential facts for a prospective candidate, including salary, benefits, and clear expectations, are more likely to win applications aligned to the job and the business.
Candidates also need to understand what businesses are bringing to the table beyond the remit of a role. That includes relocation assistance, working conditions, remote or flexible working opportunities, wellbeing programmes, training initiatives and career pathways.
It is crucial that employers consider how they can attract those considering a career or location change over the Christmas and holiday period, and pitch the unique benefits of working for you, so you become the employer of choice in a competitive market.
