5 Crucial Elements to Consider that Enhance Your Reputation

It is every candidate’s dream to have multiple job offers, however, it can make the decision-making process a bit of a challenge.

In the construction industry at the moment, top talent is highly sought, and some candidates are finding themselves in this position, but many are sharing they don’t know how to best handle multiple offers without damaging their relationship with the organisations they turn down.

Those that understand the flows and cycles in the industry, know that your conduct, reliability and loyalty, or not, is remembered. How you conduct yourself in the good times will come into consideration in the future, so when considering multiple offers and how you conduct yourself at this time, think of the long-game and build and develop and sustain a good reputation for yourself.

What to Avoid

The one thing that will negatively affect your reputation, is to accept an offer, then retract it if a better one comes along. Retracting your acceptance will damage your reputation with the company and everyone involved in the recruitment process.

When you accept an offer, it sets into action a chain of events that affect numerous others including:-

  • Onboarding preparations with the company;
  • Notifications to the other candidates
  • The Job posting is removed from employment platforms
  • Other candidates move their search onto new companies, or accept other offers
  • The recruiter puts intomotion a series of actions to wind up the post
  • The company pays the fees associated for the placement

When you retract at this stage, you cost the company substantially, not only in lost time, financially, but most importantly, they have potentially lost other candidates they were considering. For the recruiter, if they are a quality firm, they then need to action their replacement guarantees and start at the beginning. All very, very costly to the others involved in the process.

Be Honest and Upfront

Be honest. Most companies expect honesty and transparency, and will judge you if they feel you are withholding information or being cagey. Think about it. Down the track you may be responsible for considerable budgets and valuable relationships, where honesty and transparency is crucial. Your first test in building a great reputation will start at this point.

In this current environment, most employers and recruiters will ask you if you are interviewing with other companies. We recommend that you be honest and upfront, and explain that you are taking your job search very seriously, it is not often that you look for a new role, you want to make sure it is one that you have a long-term career opportunities with, you have a certain set of criteria that you are looking for and you want to explore all of the options available to you at this time.

Show collaboration and consideration

Ask either the company or the recruiter what the current window for a response is, and ensure it gives you time to consider. Of course, if it is your dream placement and everything fits like a glove in the offer, you’ve done your research beforehand and can see a long-term career with the firm, don’t hesitate.

However, when you have more than one offer on the table, of course you need timeto do your research, have any necessary conversations with others affected by the decision, and come to a conclusion. Be honest and ask for time to consider. Most companies will understand this as they want you to make a fully informed decision, and not jump to another offer in the short-term.

Work with your recruiter to see what flexibility the offer has, and to help you choose the right job for your career long term. These days, it isn’t just about moving to a higher salary, and candidates are considering roles that offer performance rewards, long term career paths, more flexibility and new challenges.

Whatever you do, be ready to make a considered decision within the timeframes required. Many employers are speeding up the interview process to secure their preferred candidate before a competitor makes an offer too.

Five Crucial Elements To Consider When Dealing With Multiple Job Offers

  1. Look at the Long Game: What are your objectives long-term –is this a company you want to be working for in five years? Does it have a good reputation that you can align yourself to?
  2. Look at the Career Benefits Offered: What opportunities do they offer to advance your career, provide development or training, career progression or mobility?
  3. Look at the Lifestyle Benefits: Whatculture do they have, do they offer gym memberships, health or lifestyle benefits, advantages for you or your family?
  4. Look at the Rewards Not Just Salary: Who pays more –what is the entire package being offered, not just the highest paying salary? A slightly lower paying role could offer a better overall package that substantially impacts your lifestyle or career advancement potential more positively.
  5. Look at Elimination: Is there a job that you can easily eliminate that doesn’t meet your career objectives or other essential criteria?

Be Honourable With Your Decision

And then, honour the decision and the parties involved. Communicate your decision to the recruiter and employer that you have chosen that you will be accepting their offer. Let the others know, professionally and respectfully, that you are grateful for the offer, but have decided to go with another offer. Your conduct in this process will win you fans and enhance your reputation that you have the ability to make considered and firm decisions that can be relied on.
